Early Life and Education
Segun Johnson grew up as a son of a local bread seller in Oke-Ira, Ogba part of Lagos State, Nigeria, where he was raised by his mother, Mrs. Samiat Adekanbi, all by herself.
He had his primary and secondary education in Lagos. During that time, his talent in playing the drums and piano granted him the opportunity to play the drum set in a local church where he was paid N10,000 monthly salary and this made him able to save some money with which he sponsored himself in school.
Segun later proceeded to study Mass Communication at the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree. He used the salary from playing drums in churches to sponsor himself in school. He also advanced to study the theory of music at the Musical Society of Nigeria and production and presentation at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria.
Career
Music started for Segun Johnson at a tender age as a local drummer in the church. He transited into singing at the age of 24 and he started his career as a cross over live band artiste at age 25. His recent show was a sold out concert in London at the Broadway theater and cargo coventry, United kingdom.
Segun's first step in his career was to serve as a backup singer for different live bands in Lagos. He had plans to learn the styles of these different live bands, especially because they all had different kinds of music as their selling points. Some live bands were good with gospel songs, some were good with juju and fuji music, some were good with Jazz and Pop songs of foreign old school songs.
For about a year, he continuously did backedup vocals for different bands just to learn their styles.
Segun Johnson also spent a major time of his learning process with Bolaji Olarewaju, popularly known as Big B.
He has made special appearances on, Sunrise daily of Channels TV, TEJU BABY FACE SHOW, Wake up Nigeria of Television continental in Lagos, African magic owambe show on MULTI-CHOICE channel on Dstv(2020,2022), Factory 78 channel on YouTube and radio(UK), Punch news paper, City people magazine amongst other media platforms nation wide.
He has performed for events of corporate organizations such as NIGERIAN BRITISH CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, PROMASIDOR NIGERIA LIMITED, GRANDOAK LIMITED, MERISTEM NIGERIA etc He has made appearances on several a list weddings and events in Lagos.
For Segun Johnson, his hit song; ‘Sho Fine Gan’ was what brought him into limelight. This track was a hype song because his style of performance is built around hype singing.
How much does Segun Johnson charge?
On The Teju Babyface Deep Dive Podcast, Segun Johnson hinted on how much He charges and other elite musicians like himself. He said: "These elite musicians don’t necessarily charge a performance fee, rather, they set a goal for their clients about the amount of spraying that their guests must do at their gatherings".
He shared a jaw-dropping scenario where a well-known Owambe artist reportedly told a client
“If you want me at your party, I must make N50 million that day.” No fixed charge, no performance fee—just a clear monetary expectation from the party’s money spray.
Segun went on to say that if the guest list isn’t full of “heavy” or well-known people, these A-list musicians occasionally decline high-paying performances.
Instead, if they think the guest list includes affluent or powerful people, they will play for free at a party. The plan? If you play for status, the money will come in buckets.
“They know the kind of people who spray,” Segun Johnson said
It’s interesting to note that, although it wasn’t mentioned in the video, Segun also told Teju off-mic the name of one of these well-known performers.
His remark regarding the behind-the-scenes activity at these upscale parties has generated discussions and raised eyebrows.
