Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed 

 
Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed is a Nigerian-born economist and politician. He was formerly a Senator and he is the owner of Baze University Abuja and Baba-Ahmed University Kano (Awaiting functional License). He's the founder and Pro-chancellor of Baze University Abuja where the Baze University Hospital which is said to be the biggest private hospital in Africa is housed. 

His anti-corruption activism drew him into politics where he served as a Representative for Zaria Federal Constituency from 2003 to 2007 and Senator for Kaduna North from 2011 to 2012. He was also a PDP presidential applicant in 2018.

Baba- Ahmed has a BSc and MSc in Economics from the University of Maiduguri in Borno State. He worked in the security Printing and Minting, Lagos before entering politics. 
 
In 2006, while a Federal representative, he earned the title of Doctor of Philosophy when he completed his PhD studies at the University of Westminster. 

Political career 

After his service year at University of Agriculture Abeokuta, Ogun state, he worked as Projects Co-ordinator, Baze Research and Data Services Ltd. and as Officer II in the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company, Lagos. He worked as a Banking Officer, First Bank of Nigeria Plc from July 1997 to Dec 1998 and then came back to become the Managing Director of Baze Research and Data Services Ltd in July 1999 – January 2003, before venturing into politics.

Baba-Ahmed was tagged in April 2003 to the Federal House of Representatives for the Zaria Federal Constituency, Kaduna State. He ran on the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) platform. 

Baba-Ahmed was popular for his principled activism. During the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo, he was among lawgivers who opposed letting Obasanjo run for a third term. 

In May 2006 he said he'd not run for reelection unless action was taken to probe allegations that members had been bought to support the indigenous changes demanded for a third term administration. In 2007 he took the Independent National Electoral Commission to court over conduct of once choices. He was known for speaking out against corruption. 
 
On July 7, 2022, the Labour Party (Nigeria)’s Presidential seeker Mr Peter Obi picked Yusuf as his running mate for the 2023 general choices knowing his norms with respects to upholding law and order and his fight against corruption. 


Later career 

Speaking at an Islamic media forum in Abuja in September 2008, Baba-Ahmed called on intelligencers to valorously submit accurate reports. He said that corruption in the country is aboriginal, and special prayers and determination from all stakeholders are demanded to correct the situation. Baba-Ahmed came the Managing Director of Baze Research and Data Services Ltd. 

Baba Ahmed was Founder and Pro –Chancellor of Baze University, an independent university located in Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria which opened in April 2011. Citing his studies abroad as a standard, he said that the Nigerian educational system was" shocking" and that this inspired him to start Baze University. 
 

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed Senatorial career 


In the April 2011 choices, Baba-Ahmed polled, 398 votes in the contest for Senator for Kaduna North. Runner-up Senator Ahmed Makarfi of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), the contestant, polled, 043 votes. 

Peter Obi’s running mate

Sen. Datti is a well accomplished philanthropist. Among many of his corporate social responsibility projects; he bu ilt and donated two junior secondary schools with a total capacity of 4,000 students. It is worthy of note that the schools have graduated over 6,000 students to date.

Since the search for a credible running mate is still on, Peter Obi’s supporters urged him to consider taking Yusuf Datti-Baba Ahmed, adding that he is a credible Nigerian with excellent political and educational track records.

Supporters of the former Anambra governor on social media have been pushing for the nomination of Baba-Ahmed as the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Although i is not clear if the former federal lawmaker is interested in the ticket at the moment.

He is expected to pick a northerner as his running mate before the campaigns begin ahead of the 2023 polls. One of such supporters wrote on Twitter: “Peter Obi should pick Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed and stop wasting time.

We have all it takes to make him more popular than Kwankaoso and Atiku in no time. No northerner will see or hear Dr. Datti Ahmed and prefer Atiku or Kwankwaso. Trust me.”

Olufemi Ajala wrote: “Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed is a perfect pick and thoroughbred economist, educationist et al.” Chijioke Elvis wrote: “Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed is a Nigerian economist and politician.

This is the man Peter Obi should be consulting and not Kwankwanso.” Onoriede Austin wrote: “Peter Obi give us Dr Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as your VP.”
